The Bundu mask, created and danced by a secret society of Mende women in Sierra Leone, is a work of pure symbolism. Every feature represents the ideal characteristics of female beauty, both physical and spiritual. In recent years this traditional artwork has incorporated modern influences, such as a plane motif on its crown. Far from detracting from the piece, this adds a new, intriguing element to the mask that reflects a long history of human fascination with flight...
